Small Business Entrepreneurs

Written by Kate Manley

In Australia, a small business is generally defined as having fewer than 20 employees and/or an aggregated turnover of less than $10 million. These businesses are crucial to the Australian economy, representing the vast majority (98%) of all businesses and contributing significantly to GDP and employment.

Several businesses have been identified as strong small business opportunities in Australia for 2025. These include online retail, digital marketing for small businesses, and services like pet care, cleaning, and catering. Other viable options include IT consulting, businesses supporting the NDIS, and online coaching or consulting.

However, the attrition rate suggests the risk factor is quite high, with estimates suggesting that 20% of new small businesses fail within their first year and up to 60% don’t survive beyond five years. This means a significant number of businesses are closing down.

Reasons for this vary, but one valuable piece of advice for budding entrepreneurs is to develop in an area where they have expertise: if money invested versus experience, experience will invariably be the winner. That means, try to work in the industry you wish to pursue before putting your cash, or loan finance into it.

Finding a niche in the fashion industry can be rewarding; along the way, you can realise your potential by gaining the necessary skills to increase your sales, remembering the basic premise that people only buy from people they like!
